Together with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, COMEXI supports the Mexico Public Policy Scholar’s Program which grants scholarships every year to researchers that are interested in studying the bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States.
Every year, COMEXI and the Council of the Americas arrange the Mexico City Conference as part of the Latin American Cities Conferences; where the main topics are the Economy and Foreign Policy.
In collaboration with the Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL) COMEXI sponsors the Mexico-Canada Initiative, an Independent Task Force that seeks to strengthen and enliven the relationship between both countries. This project pretends to reset the strategic importance of this bilateral relationship in the region and the hemisphere. Several distinguished individuals from the private, academic and cultural sector, as well as experienced diplomats of both countries, take part of the Task Force.
COMEXI and the Pacific Council on International Policy sponsored the Bi-national Task Force on the Mexico-United States Border. The principal objective of this Task Force was to create a set of recommendations, for both governments, on how to strengthen border security and cooperation. For this, 30 distinguished policy experts, civil leaders, business executives, opinion shapers and former governors from Mexico and the United States were brought together to form the Task Force. The set of policy of recommendations were published in “A new vision of the Mexico-United States border: joint solutions to common problems” report.
The exchange of specialists is one of the cooperation fields that exist between COMEXI and the Inter-American Dialogue (IAD). In 2008 both institutions organized the seminar “Violence towards journalists and impunity in Mexico” that sought the improvement of protection policies for journalists.
In Latin America we have formed close ties with several regional bodies such as the Argentinean Council for International Relations; the Brazilian Council of International Relations the Chilean Council for International Relations; the Uruguayan Council for International Relations and the Paraguayan Centre of International Studies. Every year, trough the Hemispheric Meetings of Councils on International Affairs, COMEXI assembles with these institutions for the exchange of different points of view and ideas on various topics of the Latin-American international agenda.
In collaboration with the Elcano Institute of Spain, on the 21st and 22nd of October, 2004, COMEXI organized the seminar “Legal Security and Foreign Investment in Latin America: the Mexican Case” in Madrid. The main goal of this seminar was to analyze how the legal and institutional frameworks in Latin America influence foreign investment in the region. Furthermore, COMEXI is a member of the Latin American International Studies Network (RIBEI), a project of the Elcano Institute and Carolina Foundation.
An Understanding Agreement with the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) was signed on the 6th of November, 2006 in India. The ICWA was founded in 1943 by Tej Bahadur Sapru, thanks to the sponsorship of Rajendra Prasad and Jawaharla Neru (Then-President and Prime Minister respectively). Its objectives are the promotion of the study of foreign affairs and India, the expansion of the well-informed public opinion, the encouragement of the relations between India and different countries, and, becoming an international relations information source via publications and events.
Along with the New York-based Council on Foreign Relations and the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, COMEXI created an Independent Task Force on the Future of North America. Its main objective was to generate analysis and proposals for the construction of a North American community, including the creation of North American institutions, coordination of relations with third parties, the building of common infrastructure and the strengthening of the relationship in order to develop a more equitable development in the region and the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Jointly with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and CIDE, in 2004 COMEXI released the First Public Opinion Survey on Foreign Policy: “Mexico and the World”. In 2006 the same Survey was made jointly and simultaneously with India, China, United States and South Korea. Additionally, it was included a section that analyzed the point of view of the Mexican leaders. Every two years new data is released.
Thanks to a close relationship with the Montreal headquarters of the North American Forum on Integration (NAFI), on the 1st and 2nd of august, 2004, in Monterrey, N.L., Mexico, it was held an Assembly under the title of “Towards a strategic North American security”. 200 experts on energy from Canada, the United States and Mexico intervened.
The Fernando Enrique Cardoso Institute (iFHC) became an affiliate of COMEXI on June the 21st, 2007, thanks o the Understanding Agreement. The iFHC is a non-profit organization founded by former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Its main objectives are the promotion of the interdisciplinary debates on the challenges that Brazil and the whole world face when looking for a sustainable development, as well as the design of the new public policy agendas in line with democracy and multilateralism.
