CLOUTHIER: MEXICAN ENERGY MINISTER INTRANSIGENT ON DISPUTED POLICIES

Fecha Publicación: 13-10-2022

Mexico’s energy minister is unwilling to bend on policies at the center of a high-profile trade fight with the U.S. and Canada, the country’s former trade minister said last week after resigning from her post.

“She doesn’t want to compromise on anything,” former Mexican Economy Minister Tatiana Clouthier said about Mexican Energy Secretary Rocío Nahle during an interview with Mexican newspaper La Jornada one day after Clouthier stepped down, according to an informal translation.

Clouthier’s resignation came just days after the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said the U.S. and Mexico were extending an initial consultation phase to resolve a U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement dispute launched by USTR in July over Mexico’s energy policies. Canada, which filed a parallel dispute with Mexico soon after, also is participating in those consultations. According to the U.S. and Canada, policies pushed by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador discriminate against foreign companies and violate several of Mexico’s obligations under the trade pact.
